Plastic Parts

Plastic is one of the most widely used materials in many industries. This material has many advantages. Some plastics are soft and flexible, while others are hard and impact-resistant. Generally, they are very cost-effective. Various plastic products are ultimately made through different plastic manufacturing processes. For designers and engineers, it is crucial to choose the right manufacturing process according to different needs. As one of the leading plastic manufacturers, HSJ is committed to providing customized plastic manufacturing services to customers.

Plastic is one of the most widely used materials across many industries. It offers numerous advantages: some plastics are soft and flexible, while others are rigid and impact-resistant. Generally, plastics are highly cost-effective. Various plastic products are ultimately manufactured through different plastic processing techniques. For designers and engineers, selecting the appropriate manufacturing method based on specific requirements is critical. As a leading plastic manufacturer, JonMake is dedicated to providing customized plastic manufacturing services for our clients.

Types of Plastic Manufacturing Methods

There are typically five main types of plastic manufacturing: injection molding, reaction injection molding, thermoforming, extrusion blow molding, and compression molding.

Injection Molding

Injection molding involves melting plastic in an injection machine and forcing it into a mold cavity under the pressure of a plunger or screw, where it cools and solidifies into the desired product.

Reaction Injection Molding (RIM)

RIM mixes two liquid materials that chemically react and rapidly injects the reactive mixture into a mold cavity for curing and forming.

Thermoforming

A type of vacuum forming where plastic sheets or films are heated to soften, then stretched over a mold surface and shaped using vacuum pressure.

Extrusion Blow Molding

Commonly used to produce thin-walled, low-cost containers such as disposable cups or bottles. The softened plastic forms a parison placed into a two-part clamshell mold. Once closed, compressed air inflates the parison to fit the mold cavity tightly. After water cooling, the plastic solidifies quickly, and the finished product is ejected.

Compression Molding

Preheated plastic materials are placed into a mold cavity. Upon mold closure, heat and pressure cure the plastic. This method is suitable for manufacturing plastic keys, washers, O-rings, and other soft, easily moldable thin-walled products.

Plastic Manufacturing Materials

For different plastic products, we may use a variety of materials with diverse properties. Common plastic materials include polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). For example, we combine plastic with silicone to protect iPads, providing water resistance and shock absorption.

Factors to Consider When Choosing the Best Plastic Manufacturing Method

Materials: The physical properties of the application part help narrow down the plastic material choices. Choosing the right material for the application is critical.

Form: It is important to consider tolerance requirements, internal features, and geometric complexity when deciding the most economical and efficient manufacturing process.

Lead time: Deadlines also help determine the best manufacturing method, as production times can vary by process.

Quantity vs. cost: Finding the balance between volume and cost-effectiveness is key. For example, injection molding is often economical for mass production, but not for prototyping because it requires a higher upfront cost.
